8 Things Gnome is Doing to Combat Climate Change

by Kelly on October 16, 2009

So, yesterday was Blog Action Day ’09 and the action topic this year is climate change. If you’re not familiar with Blog Action Day, it’s an annual international effort to “raise awareness and trigger global discussion” by “uniting the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day.”

We may be a day late, but we wanted to join the 13,000 plus blogs participating in this cause by posting 8 (8 is my lucky number) Things Gnome is Doing to Combat Climate Change. Well, some of them are just good for the environment in general. But a healthy planet is the point.

8 For the Earth:

1. We use ROHS compliant components that are free of heavy metals.
2. Stuff is stuck together with silver solder instead of lead.
3. Low VOC glue on the enclosure, good for the planet and your brain (and our brains, there are other great ways to feel loopy at work).
4. Our amps are covered with natural and sustainable hemp canvas.
5. Merch is no place to compromise on quality, even our t-shirts are printed on organic cotton.
6. We use shared resources for our utilities and other services (this has the added benefit of reducing costs so that we can save our greenbacks for better quality components and spend more time testing).
7. Zero emissions commuting: All of our daily work is done within biking or walking distance of our place of residence (or in our place of residence) to eliminate daily carbon commute expenditures.

And finally… last, but definitely not least…

8. The biggest way we contribute to protecting our environment is by designing and building a product that is meant to last forever. We do not build for planned obsolescence, like many electronics, forcing you to throw away the product and buy a new one after a few years. This amp is flexible, durable and classic, meaning that it will serve you well for its long lifetime reducing both consumption and waste at the same time.

So, rock on earth!
